This is one of the first projects I ever did, designed during my enrollment in the Google UX design course.
There isn’t really a dedicated ticket ordering app here in Bulgaria, which allowed me to in dig a bit and research possible ways to tackle this challenge.
I wanted to build a product that wouldn’t confuse the user throughout their journey, something as straightforward and easy to use as possible. I also wanted to utilize dark mode as default, because the contrast is better and it evokes the mood of a dark theater.
I didn’t really have access to a big user pools, so I started with a competitive analysis of the two biggest cinema franchises in Bulgaria, and analyzed their respective flows, looking for any gaps I could fill.
I found 3 places where the two franchises (Cinema City and Kino Arena) were a bit lacking, and where my solution could gain an edge.
I proceeded with a round of How Might We’s and came up with 3 more insights.
From there I did a small round of user interviews with some friends of mine, and created 2 personas.
Even though I didn’t have access to a large pool of potential users, I was one step closer to a cohesive idea, and there was an idea forming in my head.
I only needed to do one more thing...
The crazy eights combined with all the useful info I gathered throughout the previous stages of discovery, and ideation cemented the concept in my head and gave me confidence to go even further.
A round of wireframes later...
You know, looking back at it, my favorite part of designing was the high fidelity concept after wireframing.

So I used those colors for the main navigation, along with green for CTA’s, allowing for easily scannable content that’s slightly easy on the eyes.
The calendar dates are inspired by actual calendars and the date and time of a screening can be changed from multiple places to allow for flexibility.
At the end of the checkout process the app prints a digital ticket, the reason for which is simple - I wanted a reliable way for the user to know they have actually reserved/paid for their seats, and to reduce any confusion I designed it in the style of a physical cinema ticket.
In Conclusion
This project was a bit overwhelming when it came to actually organizing the content and keeping track of multiple elements and their respective sizing and hierarchy.

However, it was also a great way for me to brainstorm and develop a workflow that doesn’t rely as heavily on user interviews, but rather market analysis and competitive edge.

It is worth mentioning that for a market as small as Bulgaria’s, especially in economically troubled times, a mobile app that requires constant updates, needs a lot of resources to function properly, and I plan to re-visit this project in the future, to figure out a MAYA solution (Most-Advanced-Yet-Acceptable).
